While WDAS animated movies don’t put up the massive front-loaded debuts as Marvel Studios or Star Wars, longevity is often the key to their success, with their movies often sticking around longer - Frozen was in theaters for 34 weeks - or dropping miniscule amounts from weekend to weekend - Zootopia didn’t post a decrease of over 50% until the 13th weekend.

Creed II put up a strong debut, while holdovers like The Grinch (third place with $30.2 million, 21.7% decrease) and Bohemian Rhapsody (fifth place with $13.9 million, 13.6% decreases) posted minimal drops. What’s also important to consider is how extremely competitive the Thanksgiving opening weekend often is, and yet Disney continues to dominate.
WRECK IT RALPH 2 POCAHONTAS MOVIE
WDAS has the top 3 with Frozen, Ralph Breaks the Internet and Moana, followed by Disney Pixar’s Toy Story 2 ($80.1 million), Pixar’s Coco ($72.9 million), WDAS’ Tangled ($68.7 million) in fourth through sixth place, with Creed II in seventh, The Good Dinosaur ($55.5 million) in eighth, the Disney live-action movie Enchanted ($49.1 million) in ninth and Four Christmases in 10th. Eight of the top 10 Thanksgiving weekends of all time belong to Disney, with the only two outliers being Creed II, which opened in second place this weekend with a five-day total of $55.8 million, and Warner Bros.’ Four Christmases with $46.1 million. The next weekend, Frozen opened wide over the Thanksgiving holiday and set a high water mark for the long weekend that has yet to be surpassed.

Not surprisingly, the six movies above it are all Disney animated movies from both before and after the studio’s rebranding, with Hercules ($249,567), A Bug’s Life ($291,121), Toy Story 2 ($300,163), The Princess and the Frog ($393,095), Pocahontas ($448,285) and The Lion King ($793,337). Frozen earned $243,390 from just one theater, which ranks as the seventh largest per-screen average ever. What’s interesting is that, despite ultimately landing the biggest five-day Thanksgiving weekend of all time and becoming the highest-grossing animated movie ever worldwide, Frozen has the lowest opening weekend in WDAS history, since it first opened in limited release. The Princess and the Frog $786,190 (limited) Walt Disney Animation Studios Opening Weekend Domestic Box Office: The sequel also opened with a slightly bigger per-screen average ($13,859 from 4,017 theaters) than the original ($13,070 from 3,752 theaters). The first Ralph opened with $49 million en route to $189.4 million domestic and $471.2 million from a $165 million budget. It’s possible that, if the weekend estimates are adjusted up enough, Ralph Breaks the Internet could vault ahead of Big Hero 6 and Moana to take second place, and it’s also a solid uptick from 2012’s Wreck-It Ralph. YES NOIn the 11 films that WDAS has produced since 2007, Ralph Breaks the Internet’s $55.7 million domestic debut ranks as the fourth highest, behind Big Hero 6 ($56.2 million), Moana ($56.6 million) and Zootopia ($75.1 million). Ralph Breaks the Internet continues that tradition of success, with its debut in the upper echelon of WDAS’ box office debuts. While there was talk that the studio was just going to shut down WDAS after acquiring Pixar, they instead made efforts to restore the studio to its once former glory, and they have no doubt succeeded, with an 11-film run since 2007 that includes the highest-grossing animated movie of all time worldwide, Frozen ($400.7 million domestic, $1.276 billion worldwide) and Zootopia ($341.3 million domestic, $1.023 billion). While Disney animation spans back to the 1920s, we’re focusing on the studio’s rebranding (as Walt Disney Animation Studios) and renaissance following Disney’s’ 2006 acquisition of Pixar.

We’re delving deeper into the numbers to compare the three-day tally to the rest of Walt Disney Animation Studios’ movies, with many of the studio’s most recent hits arriving over the holiday. The five-day total is the second best in Thanksgiving history, just behind the $93.6 million earned by Frozen in 2013, and just above the $82.1 million Moana earned in 2016. Wreck-It Ralph 2) taking in $55.7 million over the three-day weekend and $84.5 million over the five-day Thanksgiving holiday weekend. Despite Creed II putting up a good fight (pun intended), Disney continued its dominance over the Thanksgiving weekend, with Ralph Breaks the Internet (a.k.a.
